A Little West
Style Frames
Approach:
These style frames capture a world in miniature and the dangers that can be found by those journeying through. The juxtaposition of scale, movement and action speaks to the dangers of the journey.
A rider lost in the desert flees the terrifying shadow of a giant lizard hot on her trail. She sees an empty bottle and sprints towards her apparent safety. She uses the cover of razor sharp cactus needles to thwart the lizards grasp. Narrowly finding a way into the empty bottle she looks back to see the lizard peering inside her new home. She might be temporarily safe but the Little West has many terrors.

Storyboard:
The first frame sets the scene of a rider fleeing some unseen danger in the form of a shadow. This is followed by the rider swerving wildly to avoid the lizard’s tongue. Escape is realized when the rider makes it into a discarded bottle into which the lizard cannot fit. Emphasis is on the extreme size difference of the main characters.

Asset Development:
The foundation of each image was created through macro photography of desert plants and rocks which were staged to support the visual direction. The shallow depth of field was essential to achieving the world in miniature.

Tonal Reference:
The grainy, low res, monochromatic tone evokes the feeling of a scene set in the Old West. Dust, scratches, and weathering enhance the idea of old photos.
